Having a very long history of back problems and having seen quite a number of different Physiotherapists in the past years, I frankly speaking did not have huge hopes that it would really make a difference this time around. My experience at PhysioActive however was a different and a very positive one. Gail from PhysioActive helped me to overcome back issues I have already started to give up on believing that it could be cured. Following Gail’s advice was truly a good choice. I am even back jogging on a regular basis – something others told me I will not be able to do anymore.

I have been seeing Gail after my spine fusion and hip fusion. She could explain all pains, discomfort and what was happening with my body. The treatment was personalized from Gail. It works on me as magic! She knows the specific needs. I really can recommend her!

Shockwave Therapy

PhysioActive is proud to be among one of the very few clinics in Singapore to offer extracorporeal radial shockwave therapy (RSWT) to our patients. While the name may sound somewhat intimidating, RSWT is an innovative method of providing pain relief and stimulating healing. It is useful for a multitude of problems involving the muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues. These include new injuries, poorly-healed old injuries, chronic pain, and restricted joint motion.

The Expert PhysioActive Approach

RSWT is a treatment that delivers shockwaves to targeted body areas. First, your therapist and you work together to localise your areas of pain. Then the therapist will use a handheld device to send sound shockwaves to those areas. The shockwaves cause your body’s healing abilities to kick in, delivering more blood, and thus more oxygen and nutrients, to inflamed or irritated regions. This greatly accelerates healing and helps to reduce pain. It may sound too good to be true, but RSWT is an evidence-based therapy.

Joint injuries, strained tendons and ligaments, sore muscles, and even some chronic diseases can all benefit from shockwave therapy application.

RSWT is typically extremely effective. Most patients benefit from three to six sessions per week, but many patients notice a significant improvement in their pain after just a single week of treatment.

RSWT is also a nonsurgical procedure and is virtually painless. You may notice some soreness a few hours after treatment, but this typically doesn’t long at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is RSWT the same as ultrasound therapy?

No. While the two are based on similar principles, they are not the same nor are they used in the same manner.

  • Will I need an incision for RSWT?

Absolutely not. RSWT is delivered from outside the body. It is completely non-surgical.

  • How long would each RSWT session take?

The RSWT application itself will take between 5 to 10 minutes and will be integrated with a regular physiotherapy session.

  • Is RSWT done in water?

No, it is different from other procedures that use sound waves delivered through a pool or tub.

  • Is there any possibility of infection from RSWT?

No, since RSWT is non-invasive, there is no risk of infection.

Dry Needling

If you suffer from chronic pain syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or fibromyalgia, dry needling may be able to afford you relief. The technique can be incredibly effective for soothing chronically sore muscles and pain caused by contracted knots in your muscles and connective tissue. Those patients with trigger point pain can particularly benefit from dry needling.

Don’t confuse dry needling with acupuncture. While both use needles, dry needling is a non-surgical therapy based on evidence, research, and concrete anatomy and physiology.

The Expert PhysioActive Approach

After consulting with you about your symptoms and areas of pain, one of our trained, expert therapists will insert sterile needles just under the skin at your trigger points – areas of muscle tenderness that develop from injury or overuse. The treated muscle will twitch in response to the needle. This is actually a spinal reflex and helps to break the pain cycle.

While most patients don’t even notice when the needle is inserted, you may feel some slight pain. Side effects from dry needling are generally nonexistent to mild and may include soreness and bruising. Applying dry heat to the site of the needling often relieves any lingering soreness. Of course, please communicate any issues to our staff and we will be happy to help you.

Dry needling is very safe when performed by a professional, trained therapist like our staff at PhysioActive. The needles are absolutely sterile, so the risk of infection is minimised.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Isn’t dry needling just acupuncture by a different name?

No. Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine, whereas dry needling is evidence-based Western medicine. Dry needling does not rely on chi or “energy flow.”

  • Is there risk of infection from another patient?

No, the needles used in your dry needling treatment are completely sterile.

  • How deeply is the needle inserted?

The needle is inserted to the layer of the muscle/connective tissue.

  • How long will it take to see results?

Many patients feel better a few days after a single session. For more severe problems, several sessions may be needed.

  • Will the needles cause scarring or bruising?

The needle is never inserted deep enough to strike an organ. Furthermore, all our therapists have undergone intensive training in human anatomy and physiology and make patient safety their top priority.

If you’re suffering from chronic pain or sore muscles, contact us now to learn more about dry needling and book an appointment.

  • How does my therapist avoid puncturing vital structures?

The skin might be a little irritated after treatment. On the rare occasion, there will be a small bruise. These will heal and disappear in time.

Exercise Therapy

Exercise therapy has been scientifically proven to be one of the most effective treatment forms. That’s why it is a core element for all conditions we treat at PhysioActive.

Depending on the severity of your injury your muscle function will always decrease to a certain degree. Exercise therapy improves your strength, mobility, stability and coordination, which will help you with a better and faster recovery. We will provide you with an exercise program which is specifically designed to suit your particular injury needs. Our therapists will guide you safely through the program and will focus on a high quality performance.

Exercise therapy helps with many problems including:

  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Postural problems
  • Sports injuries
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • General deconditioning

To make the treatment even more effective your therapist will provide a home exercise program, which you will need to do in between the sessions. This will help to speed up you recovery, prevent reoccurrence and it will reduce the need for multiple treatment sessions.

We often recommend continuing with a specific exercise program after your final visit to optimize your condition and to prevent reoccurrence. If you have trouble keeping up with this program or you would like to have supervision with the exercises to avoid wrong performance we do offer regular check-ups and personal training. We also provide home visits for patients who need guidance with pool-exercises and gym work.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound works with high frequency sound waves that are applied directly to the injured tissue causing an increase in tissue relaxation, local blood flow and scar tissue breakdown. This will help to reduce the pain and support the healing process. It is also a painless and non-invasive procedure.

Conditions treated with Ultrasound:

  • Tendonitis
  • Joint inflammations
  • Ligament sprains

Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy, like TENS and interferential current, reduces pain by blocking pain signals to the brain. It further increases the blood blow thus reducing the swelling and promoting the healing process. During this mode of treatment you will experience a sensation similar to ‘pins and needles’. The patient has at all times control over the intensity and will therefore never experience it as being unpleasant.

Common conditions treated with TENS:

  • Acute inflammation after injury
  • Acute stage after surgery
  • Herniation
  • Back and neck pain
  • Muscle injury

Another form of Electrotherapy is NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation). It used for rehabilitation purposes after surgery to help the patient with the contraction of muscles. It can be also used for the prevention of disuse muscle atrophy after injuries.

Thermotherapy & Cryotherapy

Thermotherapy

Thermotherapy is the use of heat to treat symptoms of acute or chronic pain, especially those related to muscle tension or spasm. Thermotherapy widens blood vessels and increases blood flow to the skin. It relaxes superficial muscles, decreases muscle spasm and reduces stiffness of joints. The hot packs are applied either before or after the treatment. You can even use hot water bottles/microwave applicable hot packs for self-treatment at home. Put the hot pack on the painful area and cover it with a towel. You can keep it for 20-30 min and repeat several times a day.

Common conditions where heat therapy is applied:

  • Neck- and back pain
  • Tensed muscles
  • Muscle- and joint stiffness
  • Chronic pain

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy simply means the use of cold as a therapy. Applying cold to the area reduces the amount of fluid flowing into the tissues and also slows the release of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. Cold also decreases the activity of cells in order to reduce the amount of swelling and internal bleeding at the injury site which means that it slows down the inflammation reaction. In the acute stage of an injury it gives relief to the pain and reduces the swelling. A cold pack or ice massage is usually applied after the treatment or used as home treatment.

Common conditions where cold therapy is applied:

  • Ankle sprain
  • Twisted knee
  • Painful shoulder
  • Acute muscle strain (24-48 h)

If you have an acute (sports) injury you should apply immediate ice to the affected area. Don’t apply the ice directly to the skin. Put a thin towel in between the cold pack and the skin. The application should last for 15-20 min and can be repeated every 3 hours.

Taping & Strapping

Sport taping

Sport taping is applied to support the affected joint during sport activities and therefore increase the stability of the joint. It prevents excessive movements and reduces pain. This will help you to get back safely to your sport activities.

Taping helps with the following sport injuries:

  • Ankle sprain
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Other painful joint conditions

Basic taping

Tape can be applied to stabilize and rest the joint during daily activities and sport. This will help to reduce the pain while using the affected joint. We also apply tape as a postural reminder, esp. to keep a correct sitting posture.
