PhysioActive is definitely at the top of my recommendation list for any athlete training for a sporting event. My massage therapists were always going beyond the pure service to provide advice on pre-game rituals and post-game recovery. While I first came to PhysioActive for my calf issues (which went away in just 1 session!), I now go back weekly for a restorative rub-down. They have been a great help in my sporting career!

Sports Massage

Muscle fatigue and soreness, joint pain, and even some degree of debility are common occurrences in the life of an athlete. Even amateur athletes are subject to the aches and pains of sports participation. Unfortunately, these minor problems can develop into serious issues over time. Without proper care, these issues may limit your activity and negatively impact your life.

Sports Massage at PhysioActive – Your Health in Expert Hands

While all sports rely on your entire body, each specific sport focuses on certain muscle groups. At PhysioActive, we understand the structure and function of these muscles and are able to optimise your sports massage experience for your unique sport and situation.

A professionally-performed sports massage helps increase blood flow, which can promote healing from injuries. Of course, the massage also feels great! It’s no wonder that both professional and amateur athletes seek sports massage for enhanced flexibility and performance. In fact, many sports participants consider massage an integral part of their training.

You will always receive your massage from a trained and experienced massage therapist. Our experts listen carefully to your needs and concerns, tailoring a custom sports massage designed to relax you as well as increase your performance potential. Additionally, we are pleased to provide complimentary cold packs, hot packs, and ultrasound during your massage.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does a sports massage differ from typical relaxation massage?

Sports massage falls under the clinical category whereas a relaxation massage, as its name implies, is more focused on relaxation and stress relief.

A clinical massage is a medical care delivered to a patient with treatment goals. Clinical massages are also increasingly being prescribed by doctors to complement traditional medical treatment of illness, injury and pain.

  • Will sports massage help my injury?

Yes. Sports massage has been proven to reduce recovery time, swelling and edema. A skilful massage therapist will also locate and release trigger points formed as a result of the original trauma.

Sports massage is however not recommended in the acute stage (first 72 hours) of an injury.

If you are feeling lost, unsure or amiss, call us for advice and book an appointment to put your mind at ease.

  • When should I get a sports massage?

Sports massage can be beneficial both pre-and post-event.

Pre-event massage can be carried out anytime from two days to immediately before an event. It can help increase the circulation of blood to the muscles and tissue elasticity for a wider range of movement.

Applying a sports massage after a heavy training session will help the muscles to relax, improve circulation and restore the flexibility. This allows for a quicker recovery and return to training without the usual stiffness and soreness.

  • Is sports massage painful?

There may be a feeling of discomfort during the massage session, depending on the level of pain the patient is already experiencing in the area.

Our massage therapists always seek to minimise pain and discomfort, even if it is chronic or long-term. They work within your pain threshold to help you heal, and restore movement and function.

It is therefore important that you communicate the pain (if any) to your therapist so that he/she can adjust the intensity.

  • How often should I get a sports massage?

Among our regular clients at PhysioActive are amateur and elite athletes who integrate sports massage into their regular training routines to help them perform at their peak levels. These athletes often come in once a week for a restorative rub-down.

There can also be a targeted plan with a goal that is based around a health outcome, e.g. injury treatment. A series of timed visits may be part of the larger plan to improve the specific medical challenges that you may be facing. As such, you may find a difference in the suggested frequency of your massage visits.
