Brigitte has helped me transform my life. I started going to see Brigitte two years ago after trying different Physio clinics around Singapore This is my story: I was in chronic pain on the right side of my body for over one year. I also could not sit on hard surfaces as that triggered even more pain. I was constantly feeling depressed. In addition I had a neuroma in my right foot that I had surgically removed. I was also taking pain medication. With high expertise and much patience Brigitte started treating me. She would teach me about my posture, muscular imbalances, stretches and strengthening exercises. She would also do dry needling in the areas where she felt it was needed. I always felt I was in great hands. Now I am a completely different person. I can sit wherever I want. I can exercise with no pain. I am constantly in a happy mood. I take no pain medication. My foot is much better. I have learned so much about my body. I have been extremely lucky to have found Brigitte. I continue to go to Brigitte but no longer as a pain patient. I go for strengthening and maintenance. I continue to learn and get stronger. I definitely had a star watching over me. Thank you Brigitte

I was referred to Brigitte with a right shoulder injury, incurred when optimistically attempting a challenging yoga pose. She did a thorough assessment and concluded that I have scoliosis, hyper-kyphosis, hyper-lordosis and chronic tension in my core, hips and shoulders, likely caused by years of hunching over a computer at work. So, basically, the shoulder injury was the tip of the iceberg! My treatment has involved releasing muscle tension, ungluing fascia, learning how to relax, unjamming / realigning joints, unlearning bad habits, strengthening weak muscles, relearning how to do even the simplest of movement. Brigitte's skilful dry needling has been a major part of restoring the condition of my muscles: yes, it's been painful at times, but the dry needling has been highly effective for me. Her ability to analyse movement and her understanding of how the musculoskeletal system works is awesome: she can always spot when I'm cheating (using the wrong muscles) and when I haven't been doing my homework. We've been working for over 3 years now - that may seem like a long time, but when dealing with extensive issues that have built up over 20+ years, they're not going to get fixed overnight. The improvement in my posture, my range of motion, my pain level and overall well-being has been tremendous. I cannot emphasis enough how much Brigitte's skills as a physiotherapist have impacted the quality of my life.

Neck & Back Care

Neck and back pain can result from a number of injuries and conditions including strain, injuries, congenital disorders, and age-related disease. Unfortunately, pain is not the only symptom of neck and back issues. Since the majority of the body’s nerve signals pass through the spinal cord, spinal injuries and disease can easily cause movement dysfunction as well.

The Expert PhysioActive Approach
Skilled, expert treatment is the key to relieving your back and neck problems. We effectively address practically any spinal issue or condition that causes you pain or limits your movement and activities through many treatment options including exercise therapy, physiotherapy, and massage.

Our modern lifestyles often lead to neck and back problems. This is particularly true of mobile device use and prolonged sitting with office work. The forward head posture encouraged by these activities puts a huge amount of strain on your neck and back. In fact, forward head carriage can cause up to 14 kg of extra pressure on your spine.

This is why PhysioActive provides posture training in addition to other treatment for neck and back issues. Our expert therapists will guide you on proper ergonomics and good posture to have you pain free and prevent future issues.

Scoliosis Management

The human spine has a gentle curvature that grants a cushioning effect to the daily impacts of walking and other activities. In people with scoliosis, this curve is abnormal. This can result in pain, not only in the back but also in the hips, shoulders, and legs.

Besides pain, scoliosis may also cause your hips and/or shoulders to be uneven, leading to a disrupted gait. When your gait is improper, you put more wear and tear on your body with every step, which can result in further problems.

The PhysioActive Solution
Whatever the cause of your scoliosis, careful and skilled physiotherapy from the experts at PhysioActive can help to correct your issue. We strengthen both the muscles around your spine and your core muscles in your abdomen and hips. This allows you to stand straighter and better support your spine.

We also offer expert brace application to assist you in recovery even when you’re not in our clinic. Evidence shows that bracing is usually very effective in correcting scoliosis.

  • How long does scoliosis treatment take?

Each patient differs, but scoliosis is a condition that is gradually corrected over time.

Shockwave Therapy

PhysioActive is one of the few private physiotherapy practices in Singapore who offer this new, advanced technology known as Extracorporeal Radial Shock Wave Therapy (RSWT).

This technology reduces or eliminates many (chronic) painful conditions such as shoulder- knee- or heel pain. Radial Shockwave Therapy is fast, safe, non-invasive and very effective treatment method. Clinical studies have proven a success rate of more than 70%, even in cases that have failed to respond to conventional approaches.

The beneficial effects of shock wave therapy are often experienced after only 1 or 2 sessions. The therapy eliminates pain and restores full mobility, thus improving the quality of life.

What sets this treatment apart from traditional treatments is that it treats the musculoskeletal pathology instead of just offering symptomatic relief. If performed by qualified therapists extracorporeal shock wave therapy has virtually no risks or side effects.

See our Shock Wave FAQ for more detailed information or call us at 6235 2647 or 6466 8906 and ask for one of our Physiotherapists.

Conditions treated with RSWT

  • Shoulder pain, e.g. shoulder calcifications, tendonitis, frozen shoulder
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Patellar tendonitis (“jumper’s knee”)
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Shin pain / tibial stress syndrome
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Heel pain, plantar fasciitis
  • Chronic neck-, shoulder- and back pain
  • Muscle tension caused by painful muscular nodules (trigger points)
  • Knee osteoarthritis

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do shockwaves help with the healing process?

Shockwaves activate the body’s self-healing powers by reinjuring the area on a cellular level. The controlled reinjuring of tissue allows the body to regenerate new healthy tissue, which leads to faster healing and return to activity. They stimulate the metabolism and enhance the blood circulation. Damaged tissue gradually regenerates and eventually heals. RSWT breaks up the scarring or calcification deposits that have penetrated tendons and ligaments.

  • How is the therapy performed?

The therapist localizes the pain region by palpation or shockwave localization and discusses the findings with you. A skin gel is then applied to the treatment area to allow the shockwaves to be introduced into the body almost painlessly and without any loss of energy. After these preparations, shockwaves are released as the shockwave applicator is moved over the pain region in a circular motion.

  • Duration and frequency of the therapy

The application takes between 5 and 10 minutes and is integrated into the regular physiotherapy session. In general, averages of 3 to 6 therapy sessions are necessary at weekly intervals.

  • Do I need a referral?

Although many of our patients are referred by their family physician or orthopedic specialist, a referral is not necessary.

  • How much does it cost?

If you’d like to read more about Shockwave, you can download information from the following page: Storz Medical (Producer’s website).

  • Does my health insurance cover the costs?

If you have a referral from the doctor the insurance company will cover for the costs. In case of no referral you have to check with your insurance company whether they will pay for the treatment.

  • How does RSWT work?

Shockwave energy is conducted from the place of its generation – the shockwave generator – to the painful body regions, where it unfolds its healing capacities. A projectile within the applicator is accelerated by compressed air. The kinetic energy stored in the motion and weight of the projectile is converted into acoustic energy in the form of long-wave shock pulses when the projectile strikes a shock transmitter. These acoustic pulses are transmitted to the target tissue by means of a protective cap and gel. Penetration depths are between 1 and 3 cm.

Shockwaves destroy cell membranes. Consequently, the noci-ceptors are not longer able to produce generator potential and can thus no longer send out any pain signals.

Shockwaves stimulate nociceptors which, in turn, release a high amount of neural pulses. As described by the Gate Control Theory, transmission of these pulses to the central nervous system is inhibited.

Owing to the mode of action of shockwaves, the chemical environment of the cells is changed by free radicals which produce pain inhibiting substances.

Based on the hypothesis towards associative pain memory (Wess), afferent pain signals are transmitted through the central nervous system by multiple synaptic junctions which eventually cause efferent fibers to control muscle tone. The reflex mechanism works just like a regulatory circuit.

During shockwave therapy, strong pain signals are conducted electrically, stimulating chemical processes at the synaptic contact sites. The complex spatial and time related stimulus pattern is stored at the synapses as a memory engram in the form in the form of long term modifications. The pathological association between pain and muscle tone and/or vascular tone is broken as a result of shockwave therapy and the strong stimuli it produces, thus enabling natural movement patterns to be remembered and recalled. In this manner, a non-pathological condition of the muscle tone can be restored.

  • Is the treatment evidence based?

If you’d like to read more about Shockwave, you can download information from the following page: Storz Medical (Producer’s website).

Osteoporosis Prevention & Treatment

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease characterised by a decrease in bone mass and density, causing bones to become fragile and more prone to fracture. More than 50% of all women over 60 suffer from a fracture due to Osteoporosis, sometimes even unnoticed.

Preventing Osteoporosis – reduce your risk

Preventing osteoporosis is important. You can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis by:

  • Weight-bearing and strengthening exercises (such as walking, tennis, dancing and weight training)
  • Having a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.
  • Not smoking
  • Drinking less alcohol

Our specialized Physiotherapist can tailor an individual exercise program, which will be specifically designed to strengthen your bones and maintain a healthy lifestyle!

Stay active!

Patients with existing osteoporosis also benefit from exercises. A sedentary lifestyle, poor posture and weak muscles promote the loss of bone mass and increase the risk of falling. Studies have shown that specific strengthening exercises can increase the bone density. All exercises can be modified to suit the patient’s individual needs and fitness level. Physiotherapy reduces the symptoms of osteoporosis and improves your quality of life.

Benefits:

  • Reduction of bone loss
  • Conservation of remaining bone tissue
  • Improved physical fitness
  • Improved muscle strength
  • Improved reaction time
  • Increased mobility
  • Better sense of balance and coordination
  • Reduced risk of bone fractures caused by falls
  • Reduced pain
